My Cars: 1991 Nissan Figaro

My Lapis Grey Nissan Figaro is named Mabel. I got her from a friend who was returning to Switzerland after a few years in the UK and didn’t want to take her with him – RHD JDM cars and Switzerland make complicated imports. She needed a little work and was taking up space in a garage, so, as a Figaro fan and because my friend is a total sweetheart, I was the first port of call to rehome her. She’s a cute litle thing. I have always loved Figaros and Mabel is a joy to own and drive.
The Nissan Figaro is a front-wheel drive, retro-styled convertible built by Nissan for one year only (MY1991). It is one of a series of quirky and characterful designs known as Pike Factory cars, all based on the turbocharged 1.0-litre Micra platform.
Introduced at the 1989 Tokyo Show, the Figaro came only with three-speed automatic transmission. Despite this, it can reach a top speed of 106 mph and offers a decent driving experience, thanks to four-link rear suspension and modern brakes. The car is also lighter than its throwback styling suggests, with plastic front wings. Standard equipment included ivory leather seats with contrasting piping, air conditioning, CD player, chrome-trimmed gauges and soft-feel dashtop.
Some 20,073 Figaros were manufactured by Nissan in the sole year of production. Factory paint colours were modelled on the seasons, and designated Emerald Green (spring), Pale Aqua (summer), Topaz Mist (autumn) and Lapis Grey (winter). I am a proud Figaro owner!
