Independent Classic Car Expert Witness
I provide independent expert valuation evidence in civil, family and criminal proceedings, typically where vehicle value is unclear, disputed, or materially affects financial outcome.
Recent instructions in the public domain include Aldermore Bank v Garrod (Pinsent Masons), Williams v Williams (Vardags) and Horlick v Jhally (Mishcon de Reya), alongside a wide range of other private and court-directed matters where discretion is essential.
I have prepared thousands of individual vehicle valuations, including many for use in legal proceedings. I am regularly instructed in matters involving disputed values, forensic analysis, and cases where reported figures do not reflect real-world market evidence. My work often involves critically assessing unsupported or inflated claims, including analysis of Proceeds of Crime reports and countering Crown valuations. I also work with Trading Standards and on Police matters.
I act as both a Single Joint Expert and party-appointed expert. Reports are prepared for scrutiny and cross-examination in accordance with CPR Part 35, FPR Part 25 and Criminal Procedure Rules Part 19. I am a member of the UK Register of Expert Witnesses.
Instructions cover classic, performance and specialist vehicles, including rare, modified, competition and historically significant examples where condition, specification and provenance materially affect value. It is not all high value assets – I am often valuing cars at the bottom of the market to settle disputes.
Expert witness ROLE
The role of an expert witness is to assist the court with independent, specialist opinion on matters outside ordinary experience.
In valuation disputes, this involves assessing condition, originality, rarity, provenance and market context, and presenting a clear, evidence-based opinion in a format suitable for court, supported by a Statement of Truth.
My duty is always to the court. My role is not to advocate for either party, but to provide objective, defensible analysis that can withstand scrutiny and cross-examination.
Single Joint Expert Witness
A Single Joint Expert (SJE) is appointed by both parties, or by the court, to provide a single independent opinion.
I am regularly instructed as a Single Joint Expert in civil and family proceedings, where a clear, impartial valuation is required to assist the court and reduce areas of dispute between parties.
Reports are prepared in accordance with court requirements and are designed to withstand scrutiny. Following service, I respond to written questions from the parties where necessary to clarify the opinion if needed.
In most cases, the SJE process resolves valuation issues without the need for court attendance, providing a proportionate and efficient route to settlement.
Role of expert evidence
In disputes where vehicle value is material, the quality of expert evidence can directly affect outcome.
Clear, evidence-led valuation reduces uncertainty, narrows areas of disagreement, and allows the court to make informed decisions based on real-world market behaviour rather than assumption or unsupported opinion.
My role is to provide that clarity, particularly in cases where values are contested, evidence is incomplete, or claimed figures do not reflect the market.
